Andamooka a small town in the Outback Region of South Australia, located about 600 km north of Adelaide. outback. Andamooka is famous for its Opal that was discovered in the area in the late 1920s, and the town grew from the scattered miners` camps that developed in the area. Andamooka lies in the middle of the desert close to Lake Torrens and 30 km from Roxby Downs. All around are tall piles of white mine slag heaps where miners have been digging for opals. There are a range of things to do at Andamooka. Discover unique `matrix opal` and the renowned local `crystal opal`. You can buy opal straight from the miners at one of the opal shops in town. Explore the vast, mostly dry salt lake of Lake Torrens, and the remote opal fields of White Dam and Stuart Creek. Enjoy a meal, a drink at the Tuckerbox or Opal Hotel. Andamooka is the gateway for 4WD tourists connecting with the Birdsville and Oodnadatta Tracks, and the Farina Adventure Trail that extends to the Flinders Ranges.
