The town of Balranald is located on the Sturt Highway, where it crosses the Murrumbidgee River on a remote flat saltbush and mallee plains area, about 860 km west of Sydney. Balranald is a service centre for the surrounding irrigation, horticulture, viticulture, and tourism. Balranald is one of the oldest settlement on the downstream end of the Murrumbidgee catchment with records dating back well before 1850. The modern Balranald is the doorway to Mungo National Park, the first National Park to be World Heritage Listed in Australia. The Mungo National Park includes an ancient dry lakebed with fascinating sights such as the Walls of China, crescent-shaped dunes (lunettes), stretching along the shore of the ancient Lake Mungo.
