Bathurst Island is located about 80 km to the north of Darwin across the Beagle Gulf and is Aboriginal Reserve. It is one of the Tiwi Islands along with Melville Island and is home of the Tiwi Aborigines. To visit the island you must obtain permits and visitors must go on a fishing charter and organised tours. You can take a one or two day tour (all meals and camping accommodation provided) with Tiwi Tours and learn about The Tiwi people and their culture. Nguiu is the largest of several Aboriginal communities on Bathurst Island and has many craft and arts galleries.
