Birdsville is a small popular town in South West Queensland, located about 1600 km west of Brisbane, and 720 km south of Mount Isa, on the edge of the Simpson Desert. Birdsville is located on the Diamantina River and is the gateway to the famous Birdsville Track that extends about 500 kilometres from Birdsville through the Strzelecki Desert to Marree in South Australia. Birdsville, despite its small size, has very good facilities including a sporting complex, gymnasium, art galleries, air services, motel, hotel, a caravan park and cabins, cafes and restaurants and a range of shops. Birdsville is renowned for its famous pub, the Birdsville Track and the annual horse racing meeting that attracts thousands of tourists for the two day event. The area is also a very popular transit point for 4WD tours and adventurers. Local attractions include: The Heritage Buildings such as The old Australian Inland Mission Hospital and the Birdsville Hotel and the Simpson Desert National Park.
