Borroloola is a small isolated town in the Arnhem Land Region of the Northern Territory on the Gulf of Carpentaria. The town straddles the McArthur River, 50 km from the estuary and is located about 950 km south-east of Darwin and 390 km from the Stuart Highway. Borroloola lies on the coastal plain between the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Barkly Tablelands. The rivers in this area have carved beautiful, scenic gorges through the sandstone escarpment in their upper reaches. The rivers and coastal areas are home to the renowned barramundi, and Borroloola has a renowned reputation amongst anglers. The King Ash Bay fishing club is located on the McArthur River about 40km downstream from Borroloola and has an excellent boat ramp for fishing trips in the mangrove-lined waterways of the McArthur estuary and offshore around the islands of the Sir Edward Pellew Group. The Fishing Classic competition is held over the Easter weekend each year. Local attractions include: # Borroloola History and Museum # Barranyi ( North Island) National Park # Caranbirini Nature Reserve # Limmen Bight National Park ( Proposed ).
