It is named after a mythical creature described in Australian Aboriginal mythology. The Bunyip River flows into Westernport Bay in southern Victoria near the town. Bunyip has a charming local annual show, with categories for dogs, cats, horses, crafts, cookery, handicraft, art work and many other categories. Bunyip also has an excellent wildlife sanctuary, which includes an excellent range of birds with more than 50 different birds having been identified from the area. Nature reserves in the Bunyip area include Mount Worth State Park, Bunyip State Park and Baw Baw National Park. A local country music festival is held in Bunyip every February.
