The Albert River close to Burketown is tidal and navigable and the Gulf and the Albert River Estuary can be accessed from Burketown by boat for short or long-duration fishing trips. Burketown is surrounded by flat, grassy plains in the south and huge salt marshes and wetlands to the northern area. The wetlands are breeding grounds of barramundi, crocodiles and prawns and supports huge flocks of birds.
