The Burrup Peninsula, traditionally called Murujuga, is located on the north western coast of Western Australia contains a huge collection of more than a million prehistoric rock art that date back more than 30,000 years old. The collection of standing stones is very large and the area is covered in ancient campsites and artefacts cover the whole area. This area is older than Stonehenge. Burrup Peninsula is part of the Dampier Archipelago on the north-west coast in the Gascoyne / Coral Coast Region. The art work includes carvings of animals, humans, and birds including designs depicting some creatures that have been extinct for about 3,000 years. The Burrup Peninsula is also home to the Northwest Shelf Gas Project. You can access the Burrup Peninsular from the town of Dampier which is a two-day drive north from Perth, or you can fly to Karratha and then it is a half an hour drive.
