Local attractions and tourist activities are focused on the Boyne River, Lake Awoonga and the Port Curtis Historical Village, located on the banks of the Calliope River. Lake Awoonga was built to supply water to the city of Gladstone, Calliope and other townships in the region, but us a fantastic fishing and boating area, attracting visitors from all over Queensland. The iconic fish species of Barramundi and Mangrove Jack are bred locally for release into Lake Awoonga, maintaining stocks for the fisheries. Red claw crayfish are also a focus for anglers. The area boasts a National Parks with rainforests and forests, horse riding trails, bush camping, historical homesteads, heritage buildings and many lookouts. Calliope attracts many gold fossickers and it was one of the first gold mining areas in Queensland. There are local collecting areas for chalcedony and petrified wood, as well. The famous Diggers Arms pub was built during the gold boom and stands today as a reminder of the town`s heritage. There is also a country club with a challenging golf course, good sporting facilities and many village shops.
