Access is by dirt road, air, or via ferry, charter boat of sailing boats along the tropical coast from Cairns and Port Doulas. The eastern coastal corridor is rainforest, but the land to the west of the Great Dividing Range is mostly tropical scrubland, woodland and grasslands. There is a wonderful diversity of landscapes and habitats worth exploring. The numerous rivers have very low flows or are dry in the dry season (May-November), but become ragging torrents in the wet season (December-April), when the road to the top of Cape York, Weipa and Bamaga becomes impassable. Many fishing tour operators are available targeting the renowned Barramundi and other sports fish. These charter vessels include live aboard charter vessels and daytrip vessels operating from Cape York, Port Douglas and Cairns. Diving and sailing charters and cruises are also available that visit this area. The fishing from the local wharfs and your own boat is excellent, but be aware that crocodiles are common in this area. Hire boats, scenic and charter helicopter flights, diving, sailing and fishing cruises, horse riding, eco-tours, crocodile spotting tours and various Cape York Tip tours are just some of the many activities available, that will suit everyone`s taste in this wonderful area.
