It lies sandwiched between the ocean and the spectacular cliffs of the Illawarra escarpment, which forms a backdrop to the beaches in this area. Nearby is the spectacular Sea Cliff Bridge, which winds along the coastline jutting out over the ocean because of the difficult terrain. Coalcliff has a surf life-saving club, railway station, a beautiful beach, rock pools off Paterson Road, change rooms and park with playground, and a parking area for tourists planning to see the views from the bridge. Angling is popular from the rocks, headlands, beaches and offshore. The main Coalcliff Beach is about 600 m long and faces south-east. It lies north of a rock platform containing rock pools. At the northern end is another narrow beach, backed by steep 50 m high cliffs.
