Cockatoo is a small town in the Dandenong Ranges Region, about 50 km east of Melbourne, in the Shire of Cardinia. It was named after Cockatoo Creek that flows through the town. Timber was the initial source of employment for the town and the towns` prospects were boosted when the narrow-gauge railway from Gembrook to Upper Ferntree Gully and Belgrave was completed in 1900. The railway is now operated by the Puffing Billy Heritage Railway and the town enjoys fame as one if its stops. The area is renowned for its beautiful forests, mountain scenery, ferntree gullies, small farms and tree covered hills. The Cardinia Reservoir and Emerald Park Lake are very popular with locals and tourists.
