Cooktown now is focused on tourism and receives many visits from cruise vessels and from visitors travelling on the coast road (4WD only) via Cape Tribulation and on the inland road that has recently been sealed with bitumen. There are rainforests, majestic rivers, spectacular mountain views, cascading waterfalls, pristine beaches, wonderful fishing and diving, beachfront holiday houses overlooking the ocean, seclusion, and is ideal for holidays based on the reef and rainforest in this unique tropical climate and environment. Tourists can also explore the intriguing the history of the area, as the place where Cook repaired his ship Endeavour, and the gold rush days. There are many attractions in Cooktown such as the botanical garden, museum, walking trails, fishing, river cruises, freshwater swimming holes. Fish with the locals at the local Fishermans wharf and catch Barramundi, Spanish Mackerel, Queenfish and many more species, or hire a tinnie. Visit the Lakefielf National Park, Princess Charlotte Bay and the McIvor River. This is an excellent place to join a charter fishing cruise to the outer reef.
