Cooma, the largest town in the Snowy Mountains, is located on the Monaro Highway about 120 km south of Canberra. Cooma has historic streets and a heritage railway station recall the mid-1800s, and the town reflects the history of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Authority was established in 1949. The Authority's Information Centre at Cooma provides an intriguing display of the scheme, its history and the tours that are available. Cooma is known as the Capital of the Snowy Mountains and is a popular stopover place for people en route to the mountains, the ski reports or the south coast.
