Coonalpyn is a small town in South Australia located about 160 km southeast of Adelaide in the The Coorong District Council on the edge of the vast mallee scrub area which extends from western Victoria into the south east of South Australia. The main rural industries are canola, wheat, barley, beans and peas as well as sheep and cattle grazing. Coonalpyn is the ideal base for exploring the nearby Carcuma Mallee and Mt Boothby Conservation parks where you can see mallee fowl, emus, grey kangaroos and echidna and also a variety of birdlife and fascinating habitats. Close to Carcuma is the Ngarkat Conservation Park, which is very popular for camping and 4WD enthusiasts. One of the largest parks in the mallee, there is a diverse range of fauna and flora including echidnas, dragon lizards, western grey kangaroos, skinks, snakes, pygmy possums, hopping mice and many other marsupials. The bird life includes the rufous-crowned emu-wren, the rare Mallee fowl, western whipbird and red-lored whistler.
