The small town of Coonawarra in the Limestone Coast Region, lies at the heart of the world-renowned wine region of the same name, located about 380 km from Adelaide and 7 km from Penola. Along the road from Penola to Coonawarra there are a more than 21 wineries. John Riddoch planted the first vineyard in the area in 1890. The local terra rossa soil produces wines with flavours that are unique and characteristic of the Coonawarra Region. The area is famous for Cabernet Sauvignon but quality reds and also whites of other varieties are also produced. Wines are celebrated at events such as the Coonawarra Cup held at the Penola Race Course and the Coonawarra Cabernet Celebration and Barrel Auction. Take a guided winery tour or grab a map and tour the many cellar doors in the area, many of which have cafes and restaurants. There is a good range of accommodation in the area.
