Cowra is located on the Lachlan River, about 300m above sea-level and 300 km west of Sydney. It a major tourist and commercial centre for major local industries including: vegetable growing, livestock, sheep and wool, wool scouring, vineyards, furniture making, wineries and tourism. Cowra is famous for its outstanding historical, wine, tourism facilities and natural attractions, which include the spectacular Japanese Cultural Centre and Garden, restaurants and cafes, wineries, art galleries, craft shops, produce outlets and horse riding. The renowned Cowra Breakout of 1944, when Japanese prisoners of war tried to escape from a local prison camp during World War II , led to Cowra`s association with Japan and the annual Festival of Understanding. The region is a growing reputation for its unque wine and fine food. The nearby town of Canowindra, is famous as the hot-air ballooning capital of Australia, has a Heritage-listed buildings, excellent wineries, fine olive groves and orchards.
