Gold was first discovered in 1875 by wandering fossickers and a nugget was collected by an Aboriginal man in 1916. In 1931, the Golden Plateau mine was established and gold was mined until 1976. Recent exploration has seen mining re-commence in the area. Take a `walking tour` of the heritage buildings in the main street, the Cracow Hotel, the cemetery and the historic grand hospital to see how life once as in this historic town. Visit `Cracow Beach` on the Dawson River and see the rare Livistonia Palms in the Dawson River area.
