The town was designed by Walter Burley Griffin, the architect who designed Canberra. Culburra Beach has very good facilities and a small group shops and businesses that provide most of the tourist needs. There are two main beaches, Culburra Beach, sheltered inside the Shoalhaven River mouth, and Warrain Beach facing the ocean with Nowra Surf Club at the northern end. Both beaches are patrolled by lifesavers during the summer months. With two great beaches to choose from, visitors will generally find the surf or swimming conditions that suits your needs - for swimmers, board riders, body surfers and families with young children. There is excellent fishing from the beaches, from the rocky headlands and from boats in the river and offshore. Lake Wollumboola, south of the town, is a protected waterbird habitat, that also provides a great spot for canoeing and kayaking.
