Currency Creek is a small town located on the Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia about 6 km north of Goolwa. Currency Creek is also the name of a wine region that extends from Lake Alexandrina in the east, to Port Elliot in the west, and includes Hindmarsh Island. The main grape varieties grown are Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon blanc, and Shiraz. Vineyards were first grown in the area in 1969, and the region produced its first vintage in 1972. The unique Currency Creek Arboretum is being developed as a specialist eucalypt (Eucalyptus, Angophora and Corymbia) arboretum is well worth a visit. Currency Creek is renowned for its creek, its pathways, railway viaduct, Aboriginal scar trees and jet sprint racing. Visit the heritage-listed Black Swamp wetland for excellent walks and bird-watching. It is home to many bird species including endangered species such as the Mount Lofty Southern Emu Wren. Join a cruise of the magnificent Coorong, browse through antique shops in historic town Goolwa, or see scarred trees that are used to make Aboriginal canoes.
