Dampier is an attractive coastal town in the Kimberley Region of Western Australia, located about 20 km from Karratha and 1500 km north of Perth. Dampier is the launching point for the Dampier Archipelago, a wonderful group of 42 uninhabited islands located just off the coast of Dampier, many of which are protected. Hearson`s Cove is a favourite swimming beach, which is also a great spot for viewing the `Stairway to the Moon`, a display of moonlight on the tidal flats, which occurs at full moon between May and October. Dampier is a long established major shipping port and has extensive export facilities. Tours of the islands and of the industries are available. The Dampier foreshore is the main focus for recreation and it features boats ramps, an ocean pool as well as picnic and barbecue facilities. Dampier has fantastic fishing and divers also love the area because of the wonderful array of dive spots among the islands of the Dampier Archipelago. The major attractions in Dampier are: # North West Shelf Project Visitors Centre # The Port # The Beach # Dampier Archipelago # Tours aboard Reef Action which is a 12-metre catamaran which offers tours around Dampier Harbour and the Archipelago # Camping on the Islands # Fishing # Wildlife Cruises - see Dolphin, Dugons, Turtles, and Whales # Historic Sites # Rock Engravings # Red Dog - A statute of a famous kelpie/cattledog cross at the entrance to the town.
