The old mining town and tourist centre of Derby. located in the North East Region of Tasmania, is famous for its excellent Tin Mine Centre museum which explains the operation of the local mine and its history. Derby is a popular stop-over town located about 100 km north east of Launceston on the banks of the Ringarooma River, about halfway between Launceston and the east coast. You can enjoy a tour through the Derby Tin Mine Centre to discover the heritage of the early pioneering days in Derby and go panning for gold nuggets. You can walk around town and explore the charming array of shops including a wide range of goods such as antiques, modern crafts, second-hand books, and enjoy a traditional Devonshire tea. See Blue Lake between Pioneer and Gladstone, which is a remnant of the mining days and the water used in sluicing the ore. Each October, the crazy Derby River Derby race is held that attracts visitors from all over Tasmania. This event includes a variety of land based activities including children's rides, wood-chopping displays, craft stalls, music and lots of food and beverages. Other local attractions include: The Trail of the Tin Dragon and the Bank House Manor.
