Dunolly is situated in spectacular bushland setting in the centre of the historic goldfields area. Dunolly, Moliagul and Tarangull, together form the area known as the Golden Triangle. During gold rush, the Dunolly district produced more gold nuggets than any other region in Australia. One of the largest gold nuggets in the world, the `Welcome Stranger` nugget, 69 kg of pure gold, was found in 1869 in nearby Moliagul. There is a replica of the famous nugget at the Goldfields Historical and Arts Museum. You can hire a metal detector and other gear at the Dunolly store and try your luck at gold prospecting.
