Fitzroy Falls is located about 140 km south-west of Sydney at the north-eastern end of the Morton National Park near Mittagong and Bowral. The waterfall was discovered by Charles Throsby, who was one of the first settlers and explorers of the Southern Highlands He travelled by the falls in 1818 while travelling to Jervis Bay. Morton National Park is very scenic and includes deep and steep forested valleys, rugged sandstone cliffs and the Shoalhaven, Clyde, Endrick, and Kangaroo Rivers. The small village of Fitzroy Falls is located next to the main road between Kangaroo Valley and Nowra and is a favourite place for tourists to stop and explore the falls areas. The Fitzroy Falls reserve became part of the Morton National Park in the 1960s and the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service who maintain the paths, lookouts and walking tracks around the falls and operate a well-equipped visitors` centre. The area is very popular for canoeing and kayaking.
