Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park - Tasmania - Holiday Activities, Tours, Attractions
- Where to Go, What to See and Do
The Franklin - Gordon Wild Rivers National Park is a major component of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. The region has stunning mountain peaks, lovely rainforest, beautiful river valleys and spectacular gorges. The park is renowned for the wild and untouched rivers that meander their way through the rugged wilderness. The Franklin River is synonymous with on of Australia`s most well-known conservation battle - the battle to save the Franklin River from a proposed hydro-electric power scheme which would have drowned the river and its habitats under an artificial lake. The Lyell Highway winds for 56 km through the heart of the National Park and from which tourists can access several short bushwalks and picnic spots along the way. The park can also be visited by cruise boats which depart from Strahan on the West Coast. There are also many renowned tracks through the park that require several days to complete and transit flights from Melbourne to pick you up or drop you off at Melaleuca and Cox Bight in the heart of the Souther parts of the National Park and other locations.
