Timber is the major industry which supplies local timber sawmillsand the Australian Paper Mills pulp mill at Hospital Bay. Geeveston is the gateway to the renowned Hartz Mountains National Park and Arve River forests. Go to the Geeveston Forest and Heritage Centre, to learn about the heritage of the area and the ecology of the surrounding forests. Along the Arve Road Forest Drive is the Tahune Airwalk and the Tahune Forest Reserve. The local rivers abound with brown trout and you can visit the Geeveston Highlands Salmon and Trout Fishery centre to learn about flyfishing. The surrounding hills are covered in apple orchards and in autumn you can buy Pink Lady, Granny Smith, Crofton, Red Delicious and Fuji apples from roadside stalls. Geeveston has a wide range of accommodation including lodge, bed and breakfast and backpacker accommodation and is a great base to stay while exploring the forests, national park areas of the Huon and Picton River Valleys.
