George Town is a large historic tourist town in the North Central Region of Tasmania located at on the eastern bank of the Tamar River near the mouth of the Tamar River estuary. George Town has a wonderful array of historic buildings, holiday attractions and facilities for a wide range of recreational activities. You can go scuba diving on the pristine offshore reefs, go fishing in the river, from the shore, rocks or beaches or from boats offshore in the rugged Bass Strait. You can take a leisurely cruise or charter boat trip along the stunning Tamar River and its estuary. You can swim, have a picnic or go walking on the many secluded local beaches in the area. There are excellent golf courses in the area including the local George Town Golf Course and the Barnbougle Dunes Golf Course. Take of tour of the many fantastic wineries in the area. At nearby Low Head you can explore the historic pilot station, built by convicts in 1805. You can view fairy penguins as they rush up the shore to their burrows. Nearby are the vineyards and wineries of Pipers River area, and the Bridestowe Lavender Farm. To the south is the deep-water port of Bell Bay and visit the Hillwood Strawberry Farm and Lavender Garden at Rowella.
