Today, Great Western is still producing outstanding sparkling wines at the renowned Seppelt winery and other wineries. The other major winery in the area is Bests Wines - Concongella vineyard producing a wide variety of wine types. Some of the many annual events in Great Western area include a rodeo and a picnic race meeting. The grape growing started when two Frenchmen, who met each on the gold diggings at the Daylesford, noticed that the soil and climate in the district reminded them of their native land in France and planted vineyards in 1863. Taking their example, Joseph Best planted his own vineyard in 1865 with cuttings from the Trouettes, and this led to the development of the famous Seppelts winery and wine.
