Gwalia is a famous historic mining town in the desert north of Kalgoorlie in Outback Western Australia, located 4 km south of Leonora, about 830 km east of Perth and 230 km north of Kalgoorlie. Gwalia has a fascinating history. In Established 1896 the `Sons of Gwalia` mine was first established at the gold reef of the same name - Gwalia is derived from the Welsh name for Wales. The renowned first manager of the mine was none other than Herbert Hoover, who later to become President of the United States. Gwalia is also renowned as being the second largest historic gold mine in Western Australia, the site of first State hotel and WA`s first tramway. Today, Gwalia is largely a ghost town, as the gold mine shut down in 1963, but it remains a popular tourist destination with Leonora being the hub to the local mining and pastoral industries, and providing accommodation. The best way to learn about the heritage of Gwalia is to use the published guide to Gwalia entitled the `Historic Gwalia Heritage Trail`. Gwalia is a great place to visit.
