Hay is located the junction of the Cobb, Sturt and Mid-Western Highways on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River, about halfway between Sydney and Adelaide and (about 700 km away) and about 400 km from Melbourne. It is centre of a productive Hay Irrigation District and agricultural area on the wide Hay Plains.
