Herberton is a small former mining town located in the Atherton Tablelands about 122 km from Cairns. Herberton was originally established as a town for tin mining with a smelter nearby. Several vegetable crops are now grown around Herberton including tomatoes, avocados, lettuce, maize and pumpkins and a rare tropical vineyard. Herberton also has poultry and beef industries. Some of the local attractions include: # The Herberton Historical Village and Museum - has one of the largest collections of Australiana in Queensland with about 32 buildings, including a coach and livery stable, a bank, an old school, a miner`s hut, a slab hut dating from 1870, a presbytery, a telephone exchange and a pub, all of which have been relocated to a site north of the present township # The Tepon Equestrian Grounds # Local produce markets are held at the Wondecla Oval on the 3rd Sunday of every month # The Black and White photographic gallery # The Crater National Park -located a short distance out of town includes a fascinating set of the volcanic formations. A short walk of 400 m away is 'The Crater' itself, a steep sided shaft formed by an explosion. The smooth sheer sides drop about 50 m into a pool far below.
