Hinchinbrook Island - Holiday Activities, Tours, Attractions
- Where to Go, What to See and Do
The magnificent Hinchinbrook Island, > lies between the mainland and the Great Barrier Reef, offshore from Cardwell and Port Hinchinbrook and about 120km north of Townsville and 180km south of Cairns. Most of the island, the Hinchinbrook Channel and neighbouring Goold Island are part of the Hinchinbrook Island National Park - Australia`s largest island National Park. The island itself is rugged and mountainous and is covered with low scrub, thick heath and pockets of rainforest. It is an important natural refuge for many endangered species of animals and plants and the island's diverse habitats. Mount Bowen, an ancient volcano, is the highest peak on the island and rises to1,120 m above sea level. Hinchinbrook Island is a famous eco-tourism destination, with visitor activities mainly focused on two areas. There is a small secluded resort on Cape Richards at the northern end of Hinchinbrook Island, which is excluded from the national park area and has the only accommodation on the island. The 32 m Thorsborne Trail is a very popular island challenge. It runs along the east coast and walkers usually takes at least 4 days to complete the journey and must bring all their own supplies. You can camp on the island but you need a permit and numbers are restricted to protect the park. No open fires are permitted at any time. Visitors are also warned to beware of crocodiles that live in the islands waterways. On the mainland the Edmund Kennedy National Park and Lumholtz National Park are also popular with bushwalkers.
