Innisfail - Holiday Activities, Tours, Attractions
- Where to Go, What to See and Do
Innisfail is a major town on the Cassowary Coast and is well know for its sugar and banana industries but is also a good base for exploring all the wet tropics attractions and activities. Innisfail is located about one hour south of Cairns on the North and South Johnstone Rivers, and is surrounded by sugar cane and banana plantations, with the dense rainforest of the Palmerston National Park to the west. Tea, pawpaws and a variety of other exotic tropical fruits are also grown within this productive area. Aquaculture also plays a significant role in the local economy ranging from crocodile, prawn, barramundi and redclaw freshwater crayfish. The central business district of Innisfail has Australia`s the largest concentration of art deco buildings, with examples of Moroccan, Italian, Spanish, Sicilian, and Anglo Saxon art deco design facades. There is excellent fishing in the North and South Johnstone Rivers and their estuaries. Try fishing at Flying Fish Point and at Ella Bay at the mouth of the rivers or beach fishing at nearby Bramston Beach and Kurrimine Beach. There are also offshore deep sea and game fishing charters that head out to the Great Barrier Reef every day. The Wet Tropics World Heritage Area provides a huge array of activities with numerous camping grounds available. There are many river cruises on the Johnston River which is great for fishing, canoeing and kayaking. There is also horse riding on trails and excellent bushwalking through pristine rainforest.
