Iron Knob is a famous historic iron ore mining town located about 70 km west of Port Augusta and 50 km northwest of Whyalla in the heart of a semi-desert area on the Eyre Peninsula near the shores of the Spencer Gulf. Iron ore deposits were found in the late 1800s and the town was established between the twin quarries of Iron Monarch and Iron Knob to supply BHP`s steelworks at Whyalla. The quarrying at Iron Knob ended in 1998, after almost 100 years of mining, and this heritage is showcased in the museum at the Iron Knob Community Tourist Centre. The display includes mineral specimens, old mining equipment, interpretive photographs and a film about the history of mining that is shown in the theatre. Corunna Station, a farming property in the foothills just outside town featured in the movie adaption of Jon Cleary`s novel, The Sundowners. Tours of the Iron Knob mines in your own vehicle are run by the local community are followed by a 7 minute video and viewing of the display of the history of the town and mine. The Tourist Centre also sells interesting ironstone jewellery.
