Karratha is a modern town providing home for mine workers located about 1560 km north of Perth, on Nickol Bay about three hours drive from Port Hedland. Karratha providing accommodation and services for the employees and their families for the Robe River Associates, the Dampier Salt Company, Hamersley Iron and the workers on the North West Shelf Gas and Petroleum project. Karratha has extensive and very modern facilities and supports for a wide range of sport and recreational activities. Close by is the wonderful Millstream-Chichester National Park that has attractive bushland, spectacular pools, and interesting Aboriginal heritage. About 26 km along the coast, north-east of Karratha is Cleaverville Beach. This is a favourite camping spot, and is also very popular for day trips and is suitable for boating, fishing, swimming, canoeing, kayaking and camping. Hearsons Cove, is located on the Burrup Peninsula between Dampier and Karratha is another favourite swimming and picnic/barbecue spot. The Jaburara Heritage Trail in Karratha extends three and half kilometres along the top of the range providing spectacular views of the town. Aboriginal rock art and unique flora and fauna can be seen along the walk.
