Karumba is located near the mouth of the Norman River, in the Gulf of Carpentaria, about 2000 km north of Brisbane. It is a major port for of the prawning industry. The area surrounding Karumba is mostly flat wetlands which extend from the coast inland for about 30 km. These saltwater tidal estuaries are habitat for many bird species, such as pelicans, brolgas, cyrus cranes and black swans and also saltwater crocodiles - so beware! Karumba is a fantastic place for a boating or fishing adventure either in your own boat or one that you can hire locally. The main target species are Grunter, King Salmon and of course the famous Barramundi.
