Gold was discovered in 1859 and 9 kg gold nugget was discovered in river deposits at the foot of New Chum Hill. The area is rich in heritage, with relics such as the old cemetery, old buildings and the water races built by the miners. While visiting Kiandra take the Heritage Trail and learn more about Kiandra`s pioneering history and the gold rush days. About 7 km from Kiandra are the Mount Selwyn Snowfields, reaching a peak elevation of 1615m. This area offers cross-country and Alpine skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing. The Three Mile Dam, located close to town along the Cabramurra Road was built by the Chinese in 1882 to provide water for the sluicing operations at New Chum Hill.
