Flinders Island, the largest of the Furneaux group of islands in Bass Strait is about 64 km long and 29 km wide at its widest point. Flinders Island lies off the north-eastern tip of Tasmania, about 150 km from Launceston. The island is dominated by rugged ridges of granite including Mount Killiecrankie and Strezelecki Range. There are boat ramps throughout the island which is very popular for boating and fishing. There are many delightful secluded beaches and bush walking tracks on the island. The activities at Killiecrankie include swimming, fossicking for the topaz crystals, diving, beach and rock fishing, bird watching, lazing on the beach, mountain climbing, rock climbing. The Killiecrankie diamond or Flinders Island topaz is a semi-precious mineral found amongst the granites of Killiecrankie Bay. The topaz is mostly colourless, but pale blue or pink stones can also be found which are much prized.
