Kinglake was one of the main affected towns in the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009, with more than 500 homes destroyed and at least 42 people confirmed dead in Kinglake and Kinglake West. Kinglake has farmland and extensive forest areas and a national park. Many areas of Kinglake have wonderful scenic views of the Yarra Valley wineries to the south and the Melbourne sky line to the south west. The Kinglake National Park is a very popular local attraction that has excellent walking tracks, mountain biking trails and extensive camping grounds. There are many popular and beautiful picnic and BBQ areas in the area surrounding the National Park. Another recreational area is the Murrindindi Nature Reserve, that extends all the way from the township of Toolangi almost to the township of Yea.
