The town lies on the shore of the Browns River, which drains into the Derwent River near Kingston Beach. Kingston boasts many wonderful attractions including safe swimming, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, boating, sailing, golf and shopping centres. The popular bushwalking track of the Alum Cliffs Walking Trail extends along the top of the cliffs between Taroona and Kingston Beach. The Walking Trail is about 8 km in length and has excellent scenic views; it generally takes 2 to 3 hours walking time each way. Visitors can enjoy a very pleasant drive down to Margate passing through a number of small towns offering a variety of attractions and activities Blackmans Bay, Kingston Beach, Pierson's Point Lookout, Howden and Tinderbox. There are excellent views from many look-outs of the Derwent River Estuary and the waters of the D'Entrecasteaux Channel towards Bruny Island. The Australian Antarctic Division headquarters is located along the Channel Highway between Margate and Kingston. It is a good place to visit to see public displays of historic items, including many photographs from Antarctic expeditions, Sir Douglas Mawson`s sledge, and lots of information material about the beautiful Antarctic wildlife.
