The whole area of the Tasman Peninsula including the towns of Eaglehawk Neck, Saltwater River, Port Arthur, Koonya and Tirana - were once part of a larger penal colony. Port Arthur was the largest, but the other towns were established outstations. Koonya offers a special opportunity to learn about life in this convict settlement, but with modern comforts. Koonya has a number of houses and a wonderfully restored historic penitentiary consisting of a hospital, quarters, workshops, officers chapel, stone quarries, cell blocks and overseers quarters, delightfully located between the mountains and the sea.
