The scenic rainforest retreat of Kuranda Village is located about 25 km northwest of Cairns in the Wet Tropics World Heritage area. The best way to visit Kuranda is on the historic and famous Scenic Railway, or travel through the sky skimming over the top of the rainforest canopy on Skyrail Rainforest Cableway tour. Kuranda has many historic buildings mixed with a variety of upmarket restaurants, cafes, shops and craft centres. There are many galleries featuring an extensive range of glass, wood, metal, paintings, ceramics, textiles and sculptures There is also a resort and backpackers hostel. Kuranda has many excellent nature based tours and eco-tour attractions and facilities, and you can see koalas, native and exotic birds, reptiles, butterflies, kangaroos and wallabies. Visit the breathtaking Barron Falls or take a scenic riverboat tour travel on the mighty Barron River. The renowned Kuranda Scenic Railway is a must-do activity when visiting the Cairns Region. Enjoy the spectacular journey on the historic train with fantastic views of picturesque waterfalls, dense lush rainforest and steep ravines. The journey from Cairns to Kuranda takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes. The Cairns-Kuranda Railway with its 15 hand-made tunnels and 37 bridges was built between 1882 and 1891. The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway provides a unique rainforest experience travelling about 7.5 km through the McAlister Range and the Barron Gorge National Park. A popular option is to combine both of these magical journeys.
