The rural service centre and tourist town of Kurri Kurri is located about 150 km from Sydney and 15 km from Cessnock in the Hunter Valley Region of NSW. Kurri Kurri is an old coal mining town that is now more focused on the major local industries of tourism, local agriculture, vineyards and wineries. Mining began in 1891 at the South Maitland Coalfields, but closed operations in the 1950s. An aluminium smelter which began in the 1970s provides local employment. A unique feature of the town is the Mural Project was developed to showcase the heritage of the district and to encourage people to visit the town. More than 38 murals have been completed in Kurri Kurri, and in the surrounding villages of Heddon, Greta, Abermain, Pelaw, Main and Weston. A `Mural Walking Trail Guide` has been published and local volunteers trained as guides.
