Lake Clifton is a small tourist town located 38 kilometres south of Mandurah, in the Peel Region of Western Australia, between Bunbury and Mandurah, at the north end of the Yalgorup National Park. Lake Clifton is one of the few places in the world where thrombolites ,`living rocks`, grow at the edge of the lake. These structures, known as thrombolites (similar to stromatolites), are built by colonies of tiny micro-organisms that resemble some of the earliest forms of life on Earth, growing in upwellings of groundwater that is rich in calcium carbonate into the bed of the lake. Also the area is renowned for the strange Yalgorup Tunnels that can be found throughout the Yalgorup National Park area near Lake Clifton. The Yalgorup National Park was set up in the 1970s to protect the wetlands, coastal lakes and tuart woodlands in the area. The area is also a haven for birds and is important for waterbird migration patterns through the area. Lake Clifton has a range of accommodation, cafes and limited tourist facilities.
