Lake Illawarra, south of Wollongong is a large tidal, salt water lagoon with a 40km shoreline and a surface area of about 40sq km. The Lake is mostly shallow but more than 70 % of the lake is navigable by small power boats and yachts that take advantage of its sheltered waters. Lake Illawarra is an important wetland area for many bird species, including migratory species. It is home to flocks of pelicans, black swans, waders and a host of other water birds. The Lake is also popular for prawning in the summer months, using a lamp and net, and has excellent fishing. There are also excellent angling spots near the inlet and on the local beaches. The lake is suitable for sailing, boating, wind surfing, sea kayaking and many other recreational activities. The Illawarra Yacht Club is very popular and has hosted the Windsurfer Class World Championship many National Sailing Titles. Lake Illawarra is boating heaven. Bring your own or hire one at one of the many local boatsheds. There are a large number of boat ramps dotted around the lake for easy access.
