Lake St Clair National Park - Holiday Activities, Tours, Attractions
- Where to Go, What to See and Do
Lake St Clair lies in the southern part of the world renowned Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park and forms part of the magnificent Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. The lake was carved out by ice during several glacial periods over the last two million years. It is the deepest lake in Australia and the headwaters of the Derwent River, which flows to Hobart. The area surrounding Lake St Clair offers a wide range of attractions and activities with a range of wonderful walks, ranging from leisurely strolls to overnight bushwalks. Lake St Clair also marks the end of the famous Overland Track, which extends from Cradle Mountain in the north to Cynthia Bay, Lake St Clair in the south. Lake St Clair has beautiful scenic coves and beaches interspersed with rocky outcrops. Wildlife is abundant and varied including wallabies platypus, echidnas and wombats. In summer, National Park Rangers provide guided walks, talks and slide shows that introduce visitors to the ecology and cultural history of the region. The lake is also very popular for trout fishing and you can enjoy a tranquil cruise aboard the small ferry Idaclair.
