Lake Tinaroo is a spectacular fishing and recreational lake on the Atherton Tablelands, just an hour`s drive southwest from Cairns. Lake Tinaroo, also known as Tinaroo Dam, is a man-made reservoir built to supply a local irrigation area. It was constructed in the 1950`s on the Barron River close to Lake Eacham and Lake Barrine. The lake has over 200 km of scenic shoreline and a huge waterway that is ideal for all sorts of water based activities. Hire a houseboat and you can have a delightful relaxing holiday cruising around the lake, swimming, fishing for the huge Barramundi that have been stocked into the lake, viewing the tropical flora, fauna and birdlife on the lake or by bushwalking though the magnificent rainforests that surround Tinaroo Lake. Over 300 species of birds have been recorded from the lake area, which is also habitat for platypus. Try your hand at catching the unique freshwater redclaw crayfish - a unique tropical species that is a gourmet delight. You can launch your own boat of hire one locally.
