Leyburn is a small settlement with a fascinating heritage and many historic buildings that are worth seeing and exploring. The local school, dating from 1862, has an historic bell dating from 1872 and a charming play shed with a shingled roof. The renowned grave of Henry Kirby and the local cemetery are also worth exploring. The art gallery was a former butcher`s shop and the historic St Matthews Catholic Church and St Augustines Anglican Church are still used by local congregations. You can also visit the nearby town of Pratten that was once a thriving goldfield. You can still try to find some gold at Thane`s Creek fossicking reserve and at other locations in the area. The Leyburn airstrip is famous as the place where the first Australian Motor Racing Grand Prix was held in 1949. Today, this event is celebrated at the Historic Motor Sprint, which runs through the town`s main streets each year and attracts thousands of visitors each August.
