Machans Beach is located near the airport at the mouth of the Barron River. Machans Beach is a quiet residential area, but is popular for visitors and holiday makers and has its own facilities with restaurants, cafes, a garage, primary school and a Post Office. Although a large rock wall was erected years ago to prevent erosion that was threatening the beautiful beachfront houses, there is a long expanse of beach at the southern end of the bay. The sand slopes gently to the sea and at low tide the beach becomes very wide. The water is too shallow for serious swimming, but there is good swimming at Holloways Beach, which is just a short distance to the north. Machans Beach is only short 10 minute drive from the centre of Cairns and you can stay at one of the beachfront houses at Machans Beach and the other beaches nearby.
