The Gordon River and the King River which winds through the West Coast Range, drain into Macquarie Harbour. The narrow entrance to Macquarie Harbour is called Hell's Gates because of its hazardous tidal current. The entrance area outside of the Harbour is known as Macquarie Heads, and the most western point is Cape Sorell. Strahan is the base for tourism on the west coast and provides the best way of visiting Macquarie Harbour. The West Coast Wilderness Railway travels along part of the north eastern shore of the Harbour, before turning inland at the mouth of the King River. You can join a cruising ferry that take tourists to Hell`s Gates, Sarah Island and Macquarie Heads, and also upstream into the lower reaches of the Gordon River. Also charter flights from Strahan Airport offer helicopter and fixed wing flights to the area.
